Dolphin watching in the Sado estuary
The Sado estuary beside Setúbal is home to a resident group of bottlenose dolphins, Tursiops truncatus. The nature conservation institute ICNF puts the group at 25 animals for 2025, and it changes with births. Boat trips run on the estuary near the city.
Resident does not mean guaranteed. Dolphins move, and a trip can end without a sighting. Plan the trip as a boat ride in a protected estuary that may include dolphins.

Our picks: dolphins on the Sado
All three leave from Setúbal and none guarantees dolphins. The speedboat between Setúbal and Tróia is the quickest, the catamaran has a guide on board, and the harbour departure is the simplest if you are already in town.

Rules for boats and swimmers
The same rules apply to every boat.
| Topic | Rule |
|---|---|
| Approach | No active approach closer than 30 m |
| Time | Up to 30 minutes per boat in the approach zone |
| Number of boats | No more than 3 boats within 100 m of the animals |
| Direction | Watch from behind or alongside, never chase |
| Contact | No feeding and no touching |
| Swimmers | No active approach by swimmers |
| Permit | Tourist dolphin watching needs a permit, with proof on board |
Further local protection rules can apply on top of these. For most visitors, the simplest choice is a boat that follows the distance rules without exception, because the dolphins decide whether you see them.
August restrictions
Extra limits apply during the month.
In August, boats may not approach the animals between 13:00 and 15:00 anywhere in the estuary, and waiting for dolphins in the mouth area is not allowed during the month. These are seasonal limits, not a ban for the whole year. If you travel in August, check the current rules before you book.
The Reserva Natural do Estuário do Sado
The estuary is a nature reserve, established on 1 October 1980. It covers parts of the municipalities of Setúbal, Palmela, Alcácer do Sal and Grândola.
On the water, give the animals room and follow the rules above.

How to choose a dolphin trip
Four things that change the day.
Length
The trip length includes travel on the water, not only time with dolphins. Check how long the trip lasts and where it starts.
Boat licence
A permit is required for tourist dolphin watching. A boat that cannot show one is a reason to look elsewhere.
Season
Weather decides comfort on the water. July and August are the driest and warmest months on average, and August also brings the extra rules above.
Weather by month →Add a second stop
Pair a boat trip with the old town, or take the ferry to Tróia, about 25 minutes by ferry and 15 by catamaran.
