The Tróia peninsula in short

Tróia is a sandy peninsula across the Sado from Setúbal, with pine trees, dunes and long beaches. It is the Tróia in Portugal, not the city of the ancient legend: there is no link to the Helen of Troy story. The peninsula lies in the municipality of Grândola, not in Setúbal.

You cross from Setúbal on a car ferry or a faster catamaran. The ferry takes about 25 minutes on average and the catamaran about 15. On the other side you find the beaches of Tróia-Mar and Tróia-Galé and the ruins of a Roman fish-salting town.

Tróia beaches

Tróia-Mar and Tróia-Galé both have a Blue Flag in 2026 and a bathing season from 30 May to 30 September. The beach is long and sandy with pines behind it, and the dunes face the Arrábida hills across the water. There is no guarantee of calm water or lifeguard cover on every day, so look for the flags on arrival.

Private resort grounds are not public walkways. Do not count on a free pass through them to reach the sand.

The Roman ruins of Tróia

A fish-salting settlement used until the 6th century.

The Ruínas Romanas de Tróia show workshops for processing fish and salt, homes, tombs and baths. The settlement was in use until the 6th century. It is a different site from the Roman town of Cetóbriga described on the history page.

An unguided visit costs €6, and €5 for students, people over 65, walkers, cyclists and groups. Children up to 12 are free. A guided visit costs €7.50, or €6 reduced. The ruins open Wednesday to Saturday in June and September, and Tuesday to Saturday in July and August, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., with the last entry 30 minutes before closing. In July and August there is a guided visit on Wednesdays and Fridays at 10:30 a.m. Outside summer, check opening days and prices before you cross.

Tróia also has the Caldeira, a tidal lagoon with salt marsh and pine forest that is used by water birds. Keep to the marked paths, and do not count on the lagoon for swimming or on free access to every shore.
