Our picks: hiking outside the summer heat

In spring and autumn the days are less hot, and the guided Arrábida hike is a good way to use them.

Best time to visit Setúbal by plan

Match the month to what you want to do.

Beaches

July and August have the highest highs and almost no rain, and June and September are close behind. The bathing season for the Arrábida beaches runs from 4 June to 15 September 2026. Outside that window you can still walk on the sand, but lifeguard cover is not assured. See the Setúbal beaches for summer access rules.

Walking in the Arrábida

Spring and autumn are cooler than summer. In May the average high is 24.2 °C with 53.8 mm of rain, and in September it is 28.1 °C with 31.2 mm. October is mild, but its rainfall of 99.2 mm is among the highest of the year. Walks suit those months better than the midsummer heat, and the Arrábida Natural Park page lists the trails and the convent visit.

City days

The old town, the market and the museums work in any month. In the wetter months from October to January, pick a day with a gap in the weather and keep the indoor stops, like the museum, for the showers. See the old town for hours.

Boat trips and the Tróia ferry

Boat trips and the ferry run in summer and in the cooler months, with different timetables. Check the operator's timetable for your date. The dolphin watching page has the rules for sightings, and there is no promise of a sighting in any month.
