How Setúbal tours differ
Most tours use one of three settings: the water of the Sado estuary, the Arrábida hills and coast, or the towns around Setúbal. Some start in Setúbal itself and some start in Lisbon, in which case the transfer is part of the day. Check the meeting point, the length and what the price covers before you pick one.
Dolphin boats work under national rules, and the coast has its own limits. A photo of a quiet cove in a tour description does not mean you can land there. Prices on this page are examples for 2026 and can change.

Our picks: the most booked tours
The dolphin catamaran and the boat to the caves have many reviews and leave from the Setúbal and Sesimbra area. The hike is for anyone who prefers dry land, and the Azeitão wine and cheese trip is the small-group choice. The kayak is the most affordable way onto the water.

Tour types compared
What each kind of tour covers and what to check.
| Tour type | Typical focus | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Dolphin boat | Sado estuary and resident bottlenose dolphins | Boat licence, trip length, August rules, no sighting guarantee |
| Jeep or minibus trip | Arrábida hills and coast | Route, stops, and whether beach stops fit the summer access rules |
| Kayak or paddle board | Calm water along the coast | Minimum age, swimming ability, equipment, closed stretches |
| Coasteering | Rocky shoreline | Fitness requirements and the rockfall warnings on this coast |
| Guided land visit | Convento Novo, Palácio da Bacalhôa | Fixed dates, language and group size |
| Day trip from Lisbon | Setúbal with Arrábida or Azeitão | Hours on the road and time left in Setúbal |
For most visitors, a dolphin boat in the estuary plus an afternoon in the old town is the simplest first choice. Add an Arrábida trip on a second day.
Dolphin boat trips
The most popular tour from Setúbal.
A resident group of bottlenose dolphins lives in the Sado estuary, and commercial dolphin watching needs a permit. Look for a boat that keeps to the distance rules and remember that a sighting is possible but never promised. In August extra limits apply: boats keep away from the animals between 13:00 and 15:00 in the whole estuary, and waiting for dolphins in the mouth area is not allowed. Check the rules in force before you book. Read the dolphin watching page for the full rules.
Arrábida trips by jeep, kayak and paddle board
Setúbal kayak, stand-up paddle and coasteering outings.
Some operators offer jeep trips through the Arrábida hills, and kayak, stand-up paddle and coasteering outings along the coast. Route, minimum age, equipment and swimming requirements differ by product, so read each description. Rockfall is a real risk on this coast, and a stretch between the Figueirinha tunnel and Galapos stays closed. In summer, from 4 June to 15 September 2026, certain beach roads are controlled from 07:00 to 20:00. See the Arrábida page and the beaches page for access.
Guided visits on land
Two visits run on fixed terms.
Convento Novo in the Arrábida
The convent belongs to the Fundação Oriente and is open for guided visits only, usually on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. A visit lasts about 1 hour 25 minutes and costs €8, or €5 for students and visitors over 65. Children up to 6 are free. Visits are booked for a set language and date, with groups of 10 to 25. There is no public transport to the convent.
Palácio da Bacalhôa in Azeitão
The guided visit lasts about 1.5 hours and runs at 10:00 and 15:00, with other times on request. The palace is closed on Sundays and public holidays. Entry is €13 for the palace, €7 for the wine museum and €16 for both, free up to age 12. Check the current prices before you go.

Setúbal tours: frequently asked questions
Which tour should I choose in Setúbal?
It depends on what you want. A dolphin boat suits wildlife, an Arrábida trip suits scenery, and a guided land visit suits history. The table above compares types, not products.
Do I need to book tours in advance?
In summer it pays to book ahead. Check availability for your date before you plan around a tour.
Are tours from Lisbon worth it?
They save you planning the train and bus, but part of the day goes on the road. If you have two days, a train to Setúbal and a boat trip from here gives more time on the water.
Can I swim with dolphins?
No. Swimmers may not actively approach dolphins, and boats must keep their distance. Dolphin trips here are for watching.
Is the ferry to Tróia a tour?
No, it is a regular crossing, but it works as a short boat trip. The ferry takes about 25 minutes and the catamaran about 15 minutes. See the Tróia page for fares.
